...be true to yourself! Every once in a while I go on these bizarre nostalgia trips and today it so happens I decided to look up Sailor Moon on YouTube. One user commented that when she was a little girl she used to pretend to transform into Sailor Moon when the character did in the show. I left a comment saying that I was almost embarrassed to leave but left it anyway. When I was a little kid and Sailor Moon was popular on the TV my friends and I used to reenact the episode that was aired that morning before school. We each took turns "transforming" into the different Sailor Scouts and I was always Sailor Jupiter since she was my favorite. She was tough and straight-shooting but intelligent and kind at the same time. She never backed away from a fight and pledged herself to protecting the weak and innocent, as did the rest of the Sailor Scouts. But there was something about her that really captivated me. We were dorks for sure, running around with our arms flailing about, calling out our different powers as we battled evil monsters, but looking back there was something about the early 90's cartoons that is so lacking anymore.
At the end of every episode Sailor Moon would give the kids watching some bit of advice whether it was being kind to you friends, resolving conflict, doing your chores, etc. The show also taught me to be yourself, no matter how goofy or outcast you were. Somehow my friends and I were able to look past the gender barriers and simply wanted to take on roles that were good, just, kind, and thoughtful. Somewhere we went of the rails and media anymore doesn't seem interested in portraying people fighting the good fight and protecting those who need it most. This is a sad refection to me that we're so consumed in ourselves and ridiculing other people and not taking the time to consider what we're doing and how much we can be hurting each other. So just remember "Sailor Moon says be yourself!", even if you are an 8 year old boy pretending to be a girl who fights evil with lightning that shoots out of a tiara on your head...I still cant believe how nerdy I was! That's it for now. Over
